What to expect during your initial consultation

Nothing is more nerve wracking than not knowing what to expect.. For me at least, but I assume most people feel this way as well. Beforehand, I want to know exactly where to go, what to expect, and most importantly, what in the world am I expected to wear to this event, right?!

I want to relieve your fears a bit. Deciding to invest in nutrition counseling is a big step for sure, so I want to make sure the next steps are as easy as possible for you!

Pre-Consultation

Most of my meetings with clients will be done through telehealth! The video link will be sent through Healthie, the HIPAA compliant service I use.

Wear whatever you want! No judgment if you want to show up in a shirt and shorts or if you’re feeling formal, go for that floor length dress that I probably won’t be able to see!

During the Consultation

When we meet for an initial consultation, I’ll mainly be getting quite a bit of background on you! This is a chance for us to get to know each other and get a plan of action together to work on.

I’ll ask questions about your previous medical history, your family medical history, your history with food, eating and exercise. I’ll also ask about a normal day to get a feel for your schedule each day and how food fits in that schedule, as well as how comfortable you are in the kitchen and who in the household cooks. I’ll ask you about your health goals and what you really want to get out of our time together.

You can choose to answer as much or as little as you want, but the more I know the better I’ll be able to help you reach your health goals!

My Approach

When you work with me, you can talk about weight if you want to, but I will most likely never ask you what you weigh.

While some dietitians and practitioners focus on weight loss, I practice from a Health at Every Size approach. All this means is I truly believe you can be healthy at any size. Instead of focusing on weight, we’ll focus on habits that allow you to feel better, more energized, and more like you!

I believe when people are told to “lose weight,” it puts an unnecessary burden on their mental health, causing anxiety. I know anxiety, so let’s just toss that to the side. We don’t need it.

After we get your background information and I get to see the whole picture of YOU, we’ll dive into how to reach those health goals. Above all, my goal is to help you feel better and at home in your body. After we get a game plan, we’ll discuss how often you’d like to meet, set up a next appointment, and I’ll get additional information to you depending on what we talked about.

So nothing scary, right?! I promise you’ll never have to show me your pantry or freezer unless you want to! No weighing yourself daily or calorie counting. You’re more than a number and my goal is to help you on your health journey.

So what’s the next step on your health journey? I’d love to know!
